What is the danger of not protecting your wireless network?

i) Someone can attach to your wireless network and use your internet connection. A user with a sensitive antenna could be hundreds of yards away- maybe even a mile or so away.

ii) A malicious user could attach to your wireless network and then attack your computers.

In general, you should:

    1) Change access point and router passwords from their defaults. Use strong passwords.

    2)  Hide your SSID. Your SSID can still be seen, but not by the casual observer.

    3) Use encryption: 1st choice is WPA2. Next choice is WPA. Use WEP as a last resort as it can be cracked easily.

    4) Use a firewall between the internet and your network

    5) Use firewalls and antivirus protection on your individual computers.

Some additional steps to take might be:

    a) Use MAC filtering to limit which devices can connect to your network.

    b) Use static IP addresses instead of IP addresses assigned by DHCP.

We can provide a free inspection of your wireless security setup. If your security could be improved we will give you specific recommendations. You can pay us to implement or do it yourself.
